History

Senegal issued two commemoratives at Dakar on 30 August 1976 for the 1st All Africa Scout Jamboree. Each stamp is inscribed 1er JAMBOREE DU SCOUTISME AFRICAIN, SENEGAL and Nigeria 1976, and is signed J. VAN NOTEN and CARTOR. Jean van Noten designed the pair. Cartor printed it in offset lithography, comb perforated 12½.

The 80 franc, landscape at 40 × 30 mm, shows Scouts in khaki around a camp-fire before a tent, with a circular World Scout emblem at upper left. The 100 franc, upright at 30 × 40 mm, shows a pink map of Africa on a blue field. Over the map a triangular badge carries a Scout fleur-de-lis, a handshake and the English line 1st ALL AFRICA SCOUT JAMBOREE SHERE HILLS JOS NIGERIA 1976.

Imperforate stamps of the same designs exist, some with a sheet-margin date LE 10 AOUT 1976; deluxe proofs are also known. They are not given separate numbers. Accounts differ on whether the jamboree itself took place in 1976 or in 1977. The stamps date the camp at Jos, Nigeria, 1976.
