Series history
New Zealand's Health stamp for 1937, issued on 1 October: a single scarlet 1d + 1d showing a boy climbing a rock face with a coil of rope over his shoulder, NEW ZEALAND across the head and POSTAGE · HEALTH at the foot. Recess-printed, 26 × 41 mm, comb perforation 11, on paper watermarked NZ over star in vertical columns. The printing was 897,035 and the stamp stayed on sale until 15 February 1938.
The Health stamps carried a surtax for the children's health camps, and their subjects were drawn from open-air life — swimming, running, climbing — the same register of fresh air and physical fitness that the youth movements worked in. This one has no Scout emblem and names no organisation; it is the climbing boy that brings it into the Scout catalogues.
