Series history

On 2 August 1947 France issued a 5 franc brown commemorative for the 6th World Scout Jamboree held at Moisson (Yvelines) — known as the Jamboree de la Paix / Peace Jamboree, the first world jamboree after the Second World War. Domfil catalogues the stamp as 947.15 under «International Jamboree», motif «Emblem» (the jamboree / Scout emblem design).

The stamp was designed and engraved by Jules Piel, printed in recess at the French Stamp Printing Office, comb 13, format about 26 × 40 mm, sheets of 50. SOSOW records a print run of 2,875,000 (Scott 587 / Michel 786 / Yvert 787). Face value is ordinary postage (not a semi-postal).

This is a pure Scouts-on-Stamps commemorative: issued for the world jamboree itself, with a Scout emblem design, rather than a general charity or political set that happens to include one Scout vignette. Specialty material from the same production — colour proofs, an artist’s proof of an unissued 3.50 franc value, and deluxe sheets with punched holes — is shown only as optional related images, not as separate catalog pieces of this series.

ATA 1964 records about 40,000 Scouts from forty-eight countries at the Moisson Peace Jamboree and describes the design as the Jamboree insignia with the double carrick-bend knot. Imperforate artist’s proofs in various colours are noted — matching the colour proofs and deluxe material often collected alongside the issued 5 f stamp.
