Series history
Brazil issued a single 1.20 cruzeiro commemorative on 2 August 1954 for the Acampamento Internacional de Patrulhas — the International Patrol Camp held at Interlagos, São Paulo, from 27 July to 3 August 1954. Domfil catalogues it as 954.16 under «Jamboree internacional en São Paulo», motif «Explorador / Scout».
The camp was mounted as part of the celebrations for the fourth centenary of the founding of São Paulo, and was the first international Scouting event Brazil ever hosted. It followed the pattern of the patrol camp held at Gilwell Park in August 1951: small patrols camping and competing as units rather than the mass gathering of a jamboree. The stamp went on sale on 2 August, in the closing days of the camp itself.
Orlando Maia designed the stamp and the Casa da Moeda printed it in rotogravure on granite paper, in panes of 25, comb perforation 11½ × 11, in a run of 1,000,000. The violet-blue design shows a Scout in shorts and neckerchief raising a patrol pennant on its staff with one arm while waving his campaign hat with the other, a ridge tent to the left and a globe behind, over the legend ACAMPAMENTO INTERNACIONAL DE PATRULHAS 1954 - SÃO PAULO.
