Series history
Romania issued its Luna Pădurii — Month of the Forest — commemoratives on 1 April 1954, the campaign that each spring mobilised schools and youth organisations for reafforestation work. One value belongs to the Scout theme and is catalogued here: the 55 bani blue-violet, Domfil 954.3 «Plantando un árbol / Planting a tree».
Leonida Nazarov designed it and Fabrica de Timbre in Bucharest printed it in photogravure, 28 × 33 mm, comb perforation 13¾, on paper watermarked RPR endless rows, in a run of 2,000,000. The design shows young Pioneers at work on a hillside — a boy breaking the ground with a mattock while a girl in Pioneer uniform carries a bundle of saplings, with more planters and a cart on the slope behind — under the heading R.P. ROMANA / LUNA PĂDURII.
Tree planting was becoming a fixed motif of Romanian Pioneer philately: the 35 bani of the fourth-anniversary set issued eleven months earlier (Domfil 953.9) had shown the same activity with the slogan about beautifying the homeland with gardens and orchards.
