Series history

Mongolia issued a set for Youth Week on 10 July 1959. One value belongs to the theme and is catalogued here: the 40 möngö in green and violet, which Domfil lists as 959.14 «Exploradores / Scouts». The other values of the set are recorded below as non-scout companions.

The design shows a rank of Young Pioneers in neckerchiefs carrying flags past a rostrum, with MONGOLIA lettered in Latin across the head and Mongolian script around the frame. Photogravure, 44 × 33 mm, comb perforation 12.

The rest of the set turns to the other faces of Mongolian youth culture — a young musician, wrestlers, a boy on horseback, two opera singers, and the festival badge. Wrestling and horsemanship are two of the three manly games of the Naadam, so the set puts the imported Pioneer movement alongside the traditional contests it was meant to sit beside.

Domfil gives the set as 959.10/14. Further references for the Pioneer value are Michel MN 161, Scott MN 173, Yvert MN 146 and Stanley Gibbons MN 161.
