BSA fleur-de-lis with eagle and BE PREPARED between the years 1910 and 1960, under a red CANAL ZONE arch; 4 ¢ at lower right.
Series history
The Canal Zone issued a 4 cent commemorative at Balboa on 8 February 1960 for the fiftieth anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America. Domfil catalogues it as 960.1 under «50 Aniversario del escultismo americano», motif «Emblema / Emblem».
Gerald A. Doyle, Jr. designed the stamp: the BSA fleur-de-lis with eagle, shield and the motto BE PREPARED centred between the dates 1910 and 1960, under a red CANAL ZONE arch and above BOY SCOUTS OF AMERICA in red. Robert Jones engraved the lettering and Richard Bower the vignette. The U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing produced it by recess engraving in panes of 50, perforation 11. SOSOW records a print of 1,000,000.
Further references are Scott CZ 151, Michel CZ 146, Yvert CZ 122 and Stanley Gibbons CZ 216. Size is given as 25 × 40 mm.
