Series history
A camp label for the Logor S.I.P. of September 1929 at Belgrade. The four letters of the heading are the organisation: С.И.П., Savez izviđača i planinki — the Union of Scouts and Planinke, the girls' branch — which is why the fleur-de-lis and the trefoil appear as a pair in the upper corners.
Scouting in the South Slav lands was gathered after the First World War into the Savez izvidnika i planinki of the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes. King Alexander took the movement under his patronage on St George's Day 1923, an occasion marked by a large Scout gathering at Sarajevo. In 1929, the year of this label and the year the state itself was renamed Yugoslavia, the union became the Savez izviđača i planinki Jugoslavije — the name abbreviated here.
The design is a night scene: Scouts round the fire beside a bell tent with a fleur-de-lis pennant, the skyline of Belgrade behind. The margins carry the value, 30 para, and the date, 4 September. The heading is in Cyrillic while the city name at the foot is set in Latin — the two scripts of the kingdom on one small label.
Our sources do not record how many camps of this kind were held or where this one stands in the sequence. The Zagreb camp label of 1932 calls itself the second federal camp, which would fit a first camp at Belgrade in 1929, but that is inference and not something the sources consulted confirm.
