Notes

A Scout striding forward with a bugle raised to his lips and a furled flag over his shoulder, against a background of stylised mountain peaks. U ZAGREBU 1932 across the head and II. SAVEZNI SKAUTSKI LOGOR across the foot.

Series history

A camp label for the second federal Scout camp — II. Savezni skautski logor — held at Zagreb in 1932. A Scout strides forward blowing a bugle, a furled flag over his shoulder, against stylised peaks; the whole printed in blue on yellow.

The wording dates the piece as precisely as the year does. In 1930 the Savez izviđača i planinki was renamed Savez skauta Kraljevine Jugoslavije, the Scout Union of the Kingdom of Yugoslavia, and this label uses the new vocabulary: skautski, not izviđački. Set beside the Belgrade label of 1929, the pair records the change of name three years apart — and the change of script and city with it, Cyrillic and Belgrade in 1929, Latin and Zagreb in 1932, the two halves of the kingdom taking their turn.

Neither label carries a face value in the postal sense; both are cinderellas sold at the camps to raise funds, the 1929 one marked 30 para. Our sources give no printer, print run or designer for either.
