Notes
V World Scout Jamboree commemorative. Green and black. Domfil 937.1.
Series history
On 1 April 1937 the Netherlands issued a set of three commemorative stamps for the 5th World Scout Jamboree (V Wereldjamboree), to be held that summer at Vogelenzang, in the municipality of Bloemendaal. SOSOW and Domfil catalogue the issue under Scott 206–208 / Michel 301–303 / Domfil 937.1–937.3.
The camp opened on 31 July 1937 with Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands and about 28,750 Scouts from 54 countries present. It is remembered above all as the last World Jamboree attended by Robert Baden-Powell: the 81-year-old Chief Scout gave his farewell address on 9 August 1937, before his death in Kenya in January 1941. The jamboree emblem was the Jacob’s staff (staf van Jacob), the navigational instrument that also appeared in jamboree publicity and on related colonial issues.
The three values, designed by the Dutch artist Pijke (Pyke) Koch and printed by Joh. Enschedé & Zonen in photogravure, are bi-coloured commemoratives rather than semi-postals: 1½ c green and black, 6 c red-brown and black, and 12½ c blue and black. Sheets were of 100; perforation about 14 × 13; size about 21 × 30 mm. Print runs were enormous for a Scout set of the period — over 14 million of each low value and nearly 4 million of the 12½ c — which explains how common mint and used examples remain. The stamps were withdrawn from sale on 1 September 1937, shortly after the camp closed.
Related issues in the Dutch colonial sphere followed the same theme: the Netherlands Indies released its own semi-postals in May 1937 (Scott B30–B31) with surtax to help send an Indies contingent to Vogelenzang. Together, the metropolitan set and the colonial charity pair form the classic 1937 World Jamboree chapter in Scouts-on-Stamps collecting.
ATA 1964 names designer Pijke Koch and notes the special Scout-badge cancel used during the Vogelenzang Jamboree (31 July–9 August). Below each frame the printer’s legend includes the validity limit «Geldig tot en met 31 December 1937», after which the stamps were no longer good for postage. The Dutch East Indies (Netherlands Indies) also issued a two-value Scout set for the same World Jamboree.
