Series history

Bahrain marked the IX World Scout Jamboree on 1 August 1957 by overprinting the British Jubilee Jamboree issue. At the time Bahrain was a Persian Gulf Agency of Great Britain and used British stamps surcharged in the local currency, so the three values carry BAHRAIN and a new figure in naye paise, both applied in black. Domfil catalogues the set as 957.12/14.

The base stamps are the Great Britain set issued the same day for the jamboree at Sutton Coldfield, which gathered the movement for the fiftieth anniversary of Scouting and the centenary of Baden-Powell's birth. The 2½d red, by Mary Adshead, shows the Scout badge and a coiled rope; the 4d violet, by Patrick Keely, a medallion with swallows; and the 1s 3d green, by W. H. Brown, a globe with compass rose and the Scout fleur-de-lis. Harrison & Sons printed them in photogravure, panes of 120, perforated 14½ × 14, watermark St Edward's Crown and E2R multiple.

Bahrain's surcharges are 15 np on the 2½d, 25 np on the 4d and 75 np on the 1s 3d. SOSOW records 167,764, 161,783 and 158,208 respectively — a fraction of the British printings, which ran to 137 million for the 2½d alone. Catalogue references are Scott BH 115–117, Michel BH 115–117, Yvert BH 107–109 and Stanley Gibbons BH 113–115.

One caveat on sources: the Domfil line for the top value reads «75 n s 4 p», repeating the base value of the row above. The 75 np was surcharged on the 1s 3d, as SOSOW and the stamp itself show. All three values are catalogued here in rising face-value order.
