Series history

The Dominican Republic marked the centenary of Baden-Powell's birth on 9 September 1957 by overprinting its set for the 1956 Melbourne Olympics. Each of the eight diamond-shaped stamps shows a gold medallist beside the flag of their country, and each received a red-orange overprint carrying the centenary emblem and a 5 centavo surtax. Domfil catalogues the eight as 957.38/45.

The athletes run, in rising face value: Lars Hall of Sweden, Betty Cuthbert of Australia, Egil Danielsen of Norway, Alain Mimoun of France, Norman Read of New Zealand, Robert Morrow of the United States, Chris Brasher of Great Britain and Adhemar Ferreira da Silva of Brazil. The last three are airmail values. Four souvenir sheets follow the stamps here. Domfil treats them as issues of their own, 957.46 for the sheet with the Olympic flag at its centre and 957.47 for the one with the Melbourne 1956 gold medal, each listed perforated and imperforate; Michel calls them blocks 9A, 9B, 10A and 10B. The stamps within the sheets carry the 5 centavo surcharge, which is what places all four with this series rather than with the 2 centavo one.

A caution on sources: the same Olympic base stamps were overprinted twice for the centenary, with different surtaxes. This series is the 5 centavo one, Michel 601–608, which Colnect and Domfil both record. A parallel overprint with a 2 centavo surtax, Michel 593–600, was issued the same day; Scott separates the two by adding a letter to the numbers of this set. SOSOW's page for the Dominican Republic describes that other issue, which is why the link is recorded there and not here.

Twelve pieces in all, ordered by ascending face value with the souvenir sheets last, and all in the collection.
