Notes

A Pioneer launching a model glider, arms raised, water and shoreline below. Domfil 958.44 «Aeromodelismo / Aeroplane modelling». No watermark, sheets of 80 (8 × 10). AFA SU 2091, Soloviev SU 2159, Zagorsky SU 2067. Print run 2,000,000.

Series history

The Soviet Union issued two commemoratives on 29 May 1958, three days before International Children's Day. Domfil heads the entry «Escultismo / The Scouts' Movement» and catalogues the pair as 958.43 and 958.44.

The 10 kopek shows a Young Pioneer in neckerchief sounding the bugle beside a red banner, a lake and wooded hills behind him; the 25 kopek shows a Pioneer launching a model glider with both arms raised, water and shoreline below. Leonid Golovanov designed both, printed in offset, 32 × 32 mm, line perforation 12¼, in sheets of 80, two million of each.

The two subjects are the ones the Soviet Pioneer stamps return to again and again: the bugle and model aviation, the ceremonial and the technical sides of a movement that had taken the outdoor programme of Scouting and kept it running under another name. Beyond the references above the stamps are listed as AFA SU 2099 and 2091, Soloviev 2158–2159 and Zagorsky 2066–2067.
