Girl Guide in uniform holding the Afghan flag; AFGHAN SCOUT; fleur-de-lis in wreath
Series history
Afghanistan issued a Women's Day set at Kabul on 5 January 1964. The stamps are dated 1963 and Hijri 1342 and inscribed AFGHAN SCOUT and LA JOURNEE DES FEMMES. Assadullah Safi's designs cover three subjects: a boy and girl scout planting saplings (ordinary postage in puls); a Girl Guide holding the national flag (airmail); and a Guide tending two younger girls (airmail).
Twelve perforated values form the basic set — 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 puls for the plantation design; airmails at 2 afghanis (Guide), 2 afghanis (childminders), 2.50 afghanis (Guide), 3, 4 and 5 afghanis (childminder), and 12 afghanis (Guide). The same twelve designs exist imperforate. Four perforated souvenir sheets carry the 5 and 6 afghanis Guide designs and the 6 and 10 afghanis childminders designs, each with Scout emblems, the years 1963 / 1342, and a serial number; the 6 and 10 afghanis childminders sheets also exist imperforate.
The Austrian State Printing Office printed the issue by photogravure, perforated about 13¾. The postal status of the issue is disputed among collectors.
