Series history

The Yemen Arab Republic issued a Scout set at Sana'a on 20 June 1964 honouring the Boy Scouts of Yemen. Four designs cover nine values: a scout hoisting the national flag and a Scout pennant (¼ and 4 b); two scouts with flags at a camp-site beneath a fleur-de-lis (⅓, 1 and 6 b); a scout blowing a bugle before tents (½ and 16 b); and two scouts beside a camp-fire (1½ and 20 b). The stamps are inscribed YEMEN ARAB REPUBLIC and SCOUTS; values are in buqsha, and the 4, 6, 16 and 20 b are airmails.

The nine values exist perforated and imperforate. Two souvenir sheets carry the 16 b bugle and 20 b camp-fire designs, each with Scout fleur-de-lis emblems in the margins. The Austrian State Printing Office in Vienna printed the issue by photogravure, perforated 12. Printings of 12,000 are recorded for each stamp and 7,000 for the 16 b sheet; the postal status of the issue is disputed among collectors.
