Series history

On 21 December 1966 Qatar applied black currency-revaluation surcharges to the 1965 Boy Scouts of Qatar commemoratives, converting the naye paise and Gulf rupee face values into dirhams and riyals. Five triangular values (1 to 5 dirhams), perforated 14, retain the Scout fleur-de-lis with an oil derrick — the 1 and 4 dh on a plain field, the 2, 3 and 5 dh with a camp-site and a portrait of the ruler in the apex. Three rectangular values (30 dh, 40 dh and 1 riyal), perforated 14½ × 14, show Scouts saluting at a camp beneath the Qatar flag. Each of the eight designs was also issued imperforate. A souvenir sheet of face 1.70 riyals places the three rectangular designs side by side under GOVERNMENT OF QATAR; it exists perforated and imperforate. Philatelic opinion differs on the official status of the issue.
