Series history

Sierra Leone issued twelve self-adhesive commemoratives on 6 December 1969 for the diamond jubilee of Scouting in the country, 1909–1969. Walsall Security Printers lithographed the set; ten thousand of each value were printed. The stamps are die-cut. The 1 cent and 7½ cent were issued with side tabs and packed in boxes of 100; the other ten values came in sheets of 20, rouletted, with advertising on the peelable backing. Six postage values, teardrop-shaped on a faceted diamond ground, show the Boy Scouts of Sierra Leone shield — a lion between the words BOY SCOUTS and SIERRA LEONE — flanked by reef knots, and are inscribed 1909-1969 DIAMOND JUBILEE OF SCOUTING and POSTAGE: 1, 2, 3½, 4½, 5 and 75 cents. Six airmail values, diamond-shaped, show a Scout in campaign hat giving the three-finger salute, with a small portrait of Baden-Powell at left and a fleur-de-lis at right, inscribed LAND OF IRON & DIAMONDS, 1909 DIAMOND / 1969 JUBILEE and AIRMAIL: 7½, 9½, 15, 22 and 55 cents, and 3 leones.
