Series history
The Gilbert Islands issued four commemoratives at Tarawa on 5 December 1977 for the golden jubilee of Scouting there. They are inscribed Gilbert Islands and Golden Jubilee of Scouting in the Gilbert Islands, with a silhouette of Queen Elizabeth II.
John Cooter designed the set. John Waddington printed it by offset lithography, comb perforated 13, in panes of 50 as two panes of 25 with a gutter, on paper watermarked with a multiple Crown and Block CA in diagonal rows.
The 8 cent, upright, shows a gold 50 over a green Scout fleur-de-lis in a blue disc lettered TIKAUTI NI KIRIBATI and 1927–1977, with palms, a beach and an outrigger canoe. The 15 cent, landscape, is captioned Patrol meeting: a taller Scout addresses five younger Scouts in white shirts and green neckerchiefs, barefoot, beside a thatched hut. The 20 cent, Making a mat, shows a Scout sitting cross-legged weaving a green leaf mat. The 40 cent, upright, is captioned Canoeing: three Scouts in a white outrigger canoe under a triangular sail.
