Series history
Luxembourg issued two commemoratives on 17 June 1957 for the fiftieth anniversary of world Scouting and the centenary of Baden-Powell's birth. Domfil catalogues the pair as 957.1/2.
Both carry the same portrait: Baden-Powell in Scout hat, half-length in a laurel-footed medallion, printed in red-brown against a frame of solid colour — olive-green on the 2 francs, violet on the 2.50. The legend 1857 FONDATEUR DU SCOUTISME 1957 curves around the medallion and BADEN-POWELL runs beneath it, with LUXEMBOURG across the foot. The two values differ in the badges flanking the face value: the Scout emblems on the 2 francs, and on the 2.50 the cross-and-trefoil of the Lëtzebuerger Guiden a Scouten beside the world Guide trefoil.
Sam Hartz designed the pair and Joh. Enschedé en Zonen engraved it in panes of 25 — the same Haarlem house that produced the Netherlands Antilles centenary set four months earlier. SOSOW records 1,000,000 of the 2 francs against 415,000 of the 2.50, which makes the Guide value the harder of the two.
