Series history

Guinea issued two commemoratives on 2 October 1959 for the Pionniers de Guinée, the national Pioneer youth movement. Both stamps show the same flag-raising: three uniformed figures stand at attention before a tall pole from which the national flag — vertical stripes of red, yellow and green — is being hoisted; a long building and trees stand behind, under a sky graded from red to yellow. The stamps are inscribed POSTES and RÉPUBLIQUE DE GUINÉE. E. A. Wright Bank Note Co. of Philadelphia printed them by offset lithography, perforated 12; the imprint E. A. WRIGHT BANK NOTE CO. PHILA. runs under the country tablet. The 50 franc has a purple roof and a purple country bar; the 100 franc a blue building and a dark blue country bar. Sources give no designer.
