Series history

The German Democratic Republic issued two commemoratives on 3 December 1968 for the twentieth anniversary of the Ernst Thälmann Pioneer Organisation (Pionierorganisation Ernst Thälmann). Both stamps are inscribed 20 Jahre Pionierorganisation «ERNST THÄLMANN» and carry the Junge Pioniere torch emblem with the letters JP.

The 10 pfennig, on a cyan ground, shows Young Pioneers making music — among them a flute, trumpet, guitar and drum — with the national flag at the right. The 15 pfennig, framed in magenta, shows Pioneers at play and study: boxing, a model aeroplane, a globe, and other activities.

Inge Uhlich designed the set; the Deutsche Wertpapierdruckerei (VEB) printed it by offset lithography, comb perforated 13 × 13½, without watermark. Print runs are given as 10,000,000 for the 10 pfennig and 4,000,000 for the 15 pfennig. The stamps remained valid until 2 October 1990.
